The Assembly Rooms is committed to making everyone’s experience to our venue an enjoyable one.

The venue is fully accessible on the ground and first floor areas for all visitors with mobility difficulties and accessibility needs via a lift or handrail assistance. 

There is no lift to the 2nd floor and access is via steps only. 

On arrival to the venue via an automatic set of doors there is a reception desk to the left with a receptionist more than happy to offer any assistance you may need to help navigate the venue.  

Access into the venue is flat, with no steps.

First floor

To access the first floor using the East and West stairs there are 25 steps either side, which is broken down into 3 sections of (6, 12 and 7 steps) each area has a flat landing and handrail. 

The first floor includes the Crush Hall, Ballroom, Music Hall, East and West Drawing Rooms and the Under-Balcony Bar.

Lifts

To access the first floor, there is a lift to the right of the foyer. The lift is spacious and includes grab bars for assistance. The lift also includes spoken messages indicating which floor the lift is presently on and whether the doors are opening or closing. 

Signage

Directional signage is in Braille located throughout the venue. Within the building there are also call buttons for assistance if required.

Induction loop

The venue has an induction loop accessible in the ground floor, Music Hall and Ballroom areas, guests should switch their hearing aids to the 'T' position.

Toilet facilities

Accessible toilet facilities are within easy reach of the first floor area. 

Staff located around the venue can help directing to the nearest toilet area.

Each cubicle contains an adapted toilets each with grab rails, emergency buttons, lowered mirrors, and fittings. Currently these toilets allow for either a left or a right lateral transfer, not both

Wheelchair spaces

The number of available wheelchair spaces will vary dependent on the events and performances taking place. Please advise at the point of purchase if you require a wheelchair space. 

The Assembly Rooms can make reasonable adjustments to our facilities where required, such as providing a wheelchair ramp, which can be utilised to take wheelchair users on to the stage if needed. 
 

Buggies

Buggies are welcomed at the Assembly Rooms. There are Baby Changing facilities in all our toilets.

Visual impairments

Information can be passed onto event and performance hirers regarding producing conference information in braille or transferring written information onto tape for any delegates with a visual impairment.

Assistance dogs are welcome.
 

Car parking

Accessible parking is available in front of the building and on George Street if required.

Cloakroom and bars

Our cloakroom and bar facilities are located on the ground and 1st floor respectively and are all easily accessible. For certain events and performances these facilities may have slight variations dependent on the event requirements, staff are happy to help and offer advice.  
 

Tickets

Customers who wish to buy tickets for accessible positions at the Assembly Rooms should contact the event or ticket outlets. We offer accessible positions in various areas to accommodate visitors with a variety of access requirements.

Special effects

At times, some events and performances may use special effects, we will always highlight this where possible with signage, however if you have any questions relating specifically to a particular event or performance please contact our team arenquiries@edinburgh.gov.uk

Emergency evacuation

We operate a PEEP (Personal Emergency Evacuation Plan) for customers who may require one. On arrival to the venue please ask for the Duty Manager who can discuss your requirement this with you in more detail. 

Medical requirements

Customers who may need to bring medical items with them to an event are asked to make this know to the venue prior to arrival to avoid any security related concerns. Prescription medication must be contained inside the original packaging with your name that must be verified with your ID.
