Happy International Women's Day!
Thu 6 Mar Article
International Women’s Day is a time to celebrate the achievements of women—past and present—who have shaped our world. At the Assembly Rooms, women have long played a vital role, not just as performers but as pioneers behind the scenes. From its founding in the 18th century, when philanthropic women known as the Lady Directresses helped establish the venue, to today’s lineup of inspiring female artists, the Assembly Rooms has been a platform for women’s voices for over two centuries.
In the late 1700s, the Assembly Rooms was more than just a space for entertainment—it was a social and cultural hub, supported by a group of titled and philanthropic women known as the Lady Directresses. These women played a key role in shaping the venue, ensuring it provided a refined setting for Edinburgh’s intellectual and artistic gatherings. Their influence set the stage—quite literally—for generations of performers and speakers to follow.
Over the years, the Assembly Rooms has welcomed trailblazing women in comedy, literature, politics, and music, including: Shirley Williams, a politician and lifelong advocate for education and equality; Jo Brand & Jenny Eclair – two of Britain’s most celebrated female comedians; and Scottish actress and comedian Elaine C. Smith, known for Rab C. Nesbitt.
This tradition continues today, as the Assembly Rooms welcomes a lineup of inspiring women this spring: Lucy Worseley, who is making history accessible through her books and documentaries; award-winning journalist Stacey Dooley; bestselling author Ali Hazelwood who is championing women in STEM; and Shakella Dedi, who will celebrate the legacy of musical trailblazer Diana Ross.
From the Lady Directresses who helped establish the venue to the performers who bring it to life today, the Assembly Rooms remains a place where women’s voices are heard, celebrated, and amplified. This International Women’s Day, it’s the perfect time to reflect on the past and look ahead to the future of women in the arts.
