Jay Rayner: My Dining Hell

 Jay Rayner v3 003
7:30pm, Saturday 12 May 2018

Price: £21.50 (including booking fee)

Jay Rayner, the Observer’s restaurant critic for over 15 years, has written reviews of well over 700 establishments, and if there is one thing he’s learnt it is that people like reviews of bad restaurants. No, scratch that. They adore them, feast upon them like starving vultures who have spotted fly-blown carrion out in the bush.

In My Dining Hell, Jay examines our love affair with lousy reviews, rants about his most hated restaurant fads, lists some of some of the most excruciating nights out he’s ever had and – for balance – reads from some of the worst reviews his own work has ever received.

Enjoy a hugely entertaining and hilarious show in the company of one of today’s best loved food and drink journalists.

Jay Rayner is an award-winning journalist, writer and broadcaster. He is the Observer newspaper’s long-standing restaurant critic, is the resident food expert on The One Show, a regular judge on Masterchef and chair of BBC Radio 4’s Kitchen Cabinet. He has a lot of hair and a fine collection of flowery shirts…

Includes Q&A and book signing.

 BrightSpark AR William Boyd 001
19 September 2018 at 7.30pm

£19.50 + Booking Fee

**This event launches a UK-wide book tour and is William Boyd’s only Scottish appearance**

William Boyd takes to the stage – alone – to talk about his life as a creator of many fictions, beginning with the publication of his first novel, A GOOD MAN IN AFRICA in 1981 and ending with an exclusive reading from his latest novel, LOVE IS BLIND – that appears this September.

Boyd has written fifteen novels - published around the world and translated into some three dozen languages – four collections of short stories, the screenplays for seventeen films and television mini-series and three produced plays. That’s a lot of fiction for one man and Boyd relates the stories and struggles that have ensued in this long and lively career. Stories that not only include the inspiration for some of his most famous novels – Brazzaville Beach, Any Human Heart and Sweet Caress, to name but three - but also other matters arising from the business of writing for a living and living for writing. Such as - an eleven-year lawsuit against his French publisher (for theft), the particular problems of trying to write a James Bond novel, and – perhaps the most perplexing of the many fictions Boyd has created – the history of his collaboration with David Bowie in the evolution of the entirely made-up American artist Nat Tate (1928-1960) and the art-world hoax that followed.

Expect a creatively intriguing and revelatory encounter – and William Boyd, the real one, will definitely be there.

There will be a book signing after the show.

The show is in two halves of 45 minutes.

Olafur Arnalds

7:00pm, Saturday 29 September 2018

Tickets £30.25 in advance - includes b/ee
Ticket limit is 4

BAFTA Award winning artist, composer, musician and producer Ólafur Arnalds adds more dates to his worldwide tour, his first in over three years. Previously announced European shows in May, which include the prestigious Royal Albert Hall in London, have all sold out.

Fresh off his projects Island Songs, TV scores such as Broadchurch and Philip K. Dick’s Electric Dreams and a world tour with his electronic outfit KIASMOS, Ólafur and his team of fellow craftsmen and musicians are back in the lab, working on an all new live show.

The tour features a uniquely wired string quartet, a live drummer/percussionist and Ólafur’s playground of pianos and synthesisers.

The centrepiece of the show are two semi-generative, self-playing pianos that Ólafur and his team have spent over two years developing. Simultaneously a compositional tool and a innovative addition to the live performance.

“The self-playing pianos are a jolt to the creative process that forces me to try new and often surprising things. In a live setting the pianos are a integral part of the performance due to their generative nature. Each time they are played is a little different, making every performance unique.”

From north to south, east to west it cradles astonishing beauty and he’s seen it all from land, sea and sky. The human story here is a million years old and counting. The tolerant, easy-going peace we enjoy has been hard won and the places Neil’s seen have given him a unique view and understanding of British history.

Hear in his amusing and entertaining way what it all means to him, and why we need to cherish and celebrate our wonderful countries.
