Sandi Toksvig

QUITE INTERESTING

 Sandi

3:00 - 4:15pm, Sunday 3 November

£15  | £12 concessions (CURRENTLY SOLD OUT)

Sandi Toksvig is a true national treasure. She joins us for the Edinburgh launch of her new memoir – this special Book Festival event is your only chance to see her in Scotland.

Much like its beloved author, Toksvig’s Between the Stops wittily defies convention. A memoir with a twist, the new book from the QI and Great British Bake Off host takes a look at life from a different perspective – the top deck of the number 12 bus in London – made magical as only Toksvig can. Illuminated by her musings on the sights and sounds of the city and the memories they conjure, this delightful book takes you on a joyful journey and inspires us all to pay more attention to the world on our doorsteps. Her story is as surprising as it is hilarious, taking in everything from her memories of navigating the Zambezi River in her father’s canoe to being asked to read the Ten Commandments aloud on Mount Sinai by a stranger, via anecdotes about life in the Footlights with Emma Thompson and meetings with figures as diverse as Prince Charles and Graham Norton.

Talking to the equally razor-sharp Scottish journalist Ruth Wishart, Toksvig shares some of the funniest and most moving stories from the book, and discusses her life and work as a broadcasting legend; her passion for theatre and the solace she finds in books; the will behind co-founding the Women's Equality Party and her drive for justice and equality. You'll have the chance to ask your questions at the end of the event too.

Tickets cost £15 (£12 concessions), or you can order a pre-signed copy of the book with your ticket for £35 (£32 concessions). Your ordered book will be ready to collect at the event.

Supported by players of People's Postcode Lottery.

On Friday 22 November, three of the world’s toughest and most seasoned explorers will visit Edinburgh to share inspirational tales and help raise funds for Scottish children’s charity, The Polar Academy.

Taking place at The Assembly Rooms, ‘Into The Freezer’ will be the first time the New York-based Explorers Club has staged an event in Scotland.

Captain Louis Rudd MBE, Mark Wood and Paul Vicary will share stories and footage from their expeditions in the Arctic and Antarctica and help motivate their audience by revealing what can be achieved when you push mind and body to the limit.

This exclusive event will be hosted by Scotland’s greatest living Polar explorer, Craig Mathieson – the founder of The Polar Academy and a member of the world-renowned Explorers Club.
The speakers will be joined by teenagers from Bathgate Academy who participated in The Polar Academy’s latest expedition to Arctic Greenland in April this year and will be part of a documentary being shown on BBC Scotland this October.

The speakers:

Captain Louis Rudd MBE
In December 2018, the British Army Captain became the first Briton in history and only the second person in the world to successfully trek unaided across Antarctica to the South Pole. Capt Rudd finished the solo 921-mile journey in 56 days.

Mark Wood
A former soldier and firefighter, Mark Wood has completed more than 30 major expeditions. This has included summited Mount Everest on numerous occasions, an unsupported trek to the Geographic South Pole, followed directly by a 200-mile solo and unsupported crossing of the Arctic Ocean to the Geographic North Pole.

Paul Vicary
With over 30 years military experience, Paul has undertaken many challenging expeditions to help raise funds for charity. In 2016, he embarked on arguably one of the last and most difficult arenas in the world today, venturing with two other colleagues unsupported to the Geographic North Pole.

The Polar Academy
Founded in 2013, the charity uses exploration of the wilds of Scotland and Greenland to positively transform young lives affected by mental health issues.

My Last Supper with Jay Rayner

 JAY 1080x1080 LONG TITLE

7.30pm, Saturday 23 November

From £22

Imagine you are about to die. You have one meal left. What are you going to have?

It’s the question award-winning restaurant critic, MasterChef judge and writer Jay Rayner has been asked most often by audiences across the UK. It happened so often that he decided the time had come to investigate the concept of the last supper and why it intrigues us so. Is it because of the opportunity it presents us with to let your appetites run riot? Or is it because it’s a greedy way in which to tell the story of your own life? And if so, what would a man like Jay Rayner, who for two decades has made a living eating out in restaurants, choose to put on the menu?

In this barnstorming new show, based on his new book, Rayner investigates our fascination with last suppers and tells the stories of the killer dishes that would end up on his table: how he was introduced to oysters by his late mother, how he almost burnt down a hotel because of his love for snails in bubbling garlic butter and of the many ways by which the mighty pig has fed him over the years. Plus, he’ll get the audience to design their own last meal. My Last Supper follows the success of his sell out shows, My Dining Hell and The Ten Food Commandments, which have taken audiences by storm across the UK, Australia, New Zealand and the US.

My Last Supper with Jay Rayner. It’s a show to die for.
